Not solely a third-person shooter experience, "Sid Meier's Pirates!" lets the gamer build a dynamic career that is directly affected by the choices he/she makes within the game. This game for the xbox platform is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in mixing a little board-game strategy into their video gameplay. Overall, this is a good game and will keep you entertained for days. it affects your crew morale, your health and speed in a swordfight, and your ability to catch the evil Count who holds the info to find your family. Only real tic I had with this game was the amount of time that burns up when you have to sail against the wind, because in this game time is your biggest enemy.
Henry Morgan's "Queen Ann's Revenge" is about the best warship you can capture and not upgrade, its a large frigate class. The ship to ship combat is pretty basic, get in a couple of good broadsides with the right ammo and the ship is yours. To win your bride to be you must become proficient at hitting the correct buttons in time to the music during the ballroom dance sequences. This game is very challenging at the rogue captain level as you cannot just beat everyone silly in the sword fights, your opponents actually have some skill at this level. This game is quite fun to play but you must act quickly or you will become too old and ill to complete it, as your character ages as the game progresses. In this game as well as the one from the 80's you take the role of a pirate captain with the goals of amassing wealth, prestige, finding lost family members and last but not least tracking down the villain resposible for you and your families woes. I bought this game because of a similar title I bought in the 80's for the Commodore 64/128. Each adventure spans the captain's entire lifetime, and the ultimate goal is to eventually retire, at a ripe old age, with as much wealth and status as possible. The player's choices and actions can have effects on the game world, however, and as they become more powerful and feared, captains will begin to see their influence all across the Caribbean. A new ship-boarding mini-game, called "Evening the Odds," relies on button-press mimicking in the style of Shenmue's "Quick Time Events." The Xbox version also features multiplayer ship combat, complete with power-ups, for as many as four players on the same console.Overall, Sid Meier's Pirates! is designed to allow players to progress as they choose through a diverse selection of non-linear, individual missions and challenges. Sneaking through town is done from a closer, third-person perspective, but the player's pirate can engage town guards in more action-oriented combat.
